What's the Deal with Manifestation?

Embracing the unknown on the pursuit of self-improvement



Have you heard of the term manifestation? Or maybe the law of attraction? Are you curious as to how you can create a better, more abundant life for yourself? Let me introduce you to a friend of mine…

I stumbled across the concept of manifestation a few years ago. I was miserable, working in a law job that made me feel like I was on the completely wrong path in life. Approaching my 25th birthday, I called it my quarter-life crisis.

Like any lost millennial, I bought a self-help book, hoping it would give me all the answers I needed. The book was ‘You Are a Badass’ by Jen Sincero and it certainly did change my life, just not quite in the fireworks, aha, lightbulb-moment way I was expecting.

Sincero introduced me to my ego (you know that negative, nay-saying voice in your head), to self-love (the real stuff, not just face-masks and bubble baths), but mostly to the bare bones of manifestation. As a newbie to the topic, I only took away the very basics (the first time I read it, anyway).

I began to realise that our lives are what we make them, our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings create our emotions and our emotions shape our reality.

Throughout You Are a Badass, Sincero talks about aligning yourself with your goals by visualising exactly what you want, taking action to make it happen and then stepping back with faith, leaving it up to the Universe to come through with the goods.

So, this is exactly what I did. I spent every spare moment visualising myself travelling the world. Dancing in front of the Pyramids of Giza. Swimming in the turquoise waters of Turkey, hiking through the fjords of Norway, sipping Aperol Spritzes on Greek Islands… you get the picture! I told everyone that would listen (like it or not) about my dreams to travel the world, and with every pay-check, I saved every possible cent.

During this time, I also began to realise that my career goals had (obviously) changed. I didn’t want to be a lawyer anymore. I craved freedom, independence and self-sufficiency, yet I had no idea where to start. But let me come back to this point in a moment.

With an end goal in sight and light at the end of the metaphorical tunnel, the months passed and finally, the time came to quit my job, pack up my apartment and leave cold, gloomy Melbourne behind. Adios!

I went on to travel the world for twelve months. I turned my Greek, Egyptian, Norwegian, Russian (the list goes on) dreams into reality. And I genuinely felt all the magical feelings I had envisioned and so much more… But what happens when you reach your goals? You set new ones, you continue to grow.

Remember how I said I wanted to be my own boss? Well, it turns out I was manifesting this concept too.

A few months into my travelling the world dream-life, I got a job as a nanny for an entrepreneurial family. They lived the ultimate life, worked solely from their laptops and phones and travelled wherever they felt drawn to, whenever they felt like it. Being their nanny I saw every element of their lives- the good, bad and ugly! But I also gained so much insight into entrepreneurial life.

In November 2019, we were in Portugal when the family hired a new private chef. She was a Brazilian goddess/vegan chef/health coach/yogi queen/pro surfer (I could go on) and she became an amazing friend! A few years older than me, she had lived a very similar experience — quitting law school and moving to Bali, she had found her true calling.

Seeing this woman embody everything I had ever dreamed of becoming (and more), was truly inspirational. And while sipping kombucha on the Algarve Coast of Portugal she introduced me to the concept of holistic health coaching.

Needless to say, I became obsessed with the idea of helping others to unlock their best lives. I started visualising myself as a digital-nomad & holistic health coach. I spent every free moment researching courses and accreditations and I quickly enrolled.

But then I stalled.

My nanny job didn’t feel so good anymore. My travels were becoming tedious and I craved my own space and independence. I was exhausted. It was all I could think about. And you know what happened next? Coronavirus.

Next minute, I was back in Sydney, locked in quarantine with nothing but time (and wi-fi).

Despite resisting my circumstances for weeks, I knew that this was a huge neon sign from the Universe telling me that now was the time to make shift happen. Yep, subconsciously I had manifested this too.

Once again, feeling like a lost millennial, I read Jen Sincero’s ‘You Are a Badass.’ And once again, all the answers were right there in front of me, this time just a little more obvious, with a little more life experience to draw on. The truth is I am in control of my own life and I make my own reality. Duh!

Still, in the confines of lockdown, I’ve latched onto this concept. I’ve hired a manifestation coach, expanded my library of self-help books and taken my manifestation practices to the next level.

The 4 Step Equation

So, let me explain the theory of manifestation. The Manifestation Queen, Jordanna Levin, uses the Manifestation Equation, Thoughts + Feelings + Action + Faith to break this process down into four simple steps.

Step 1 Thoughts Let yourself have amazing thoughts. Think about travelling the world, being your own boss, becoming a digital nomad, having your articles published in huge publications. Whatever your dream is. Your thoughts are infinite and there are no limitations to what you can think. So think big!

Step 2 Feelings Now you’ve thought the thoughts, its time to feel the feels. Imagine yourself travelling the world, fill yourself up with all the emotions associated. The freedom, the sense of adventure, the salty air on your face, the taste of the delicious Aperol Spritz in your hand. Feel it all.

Step 3 Action While I would use the word magic to describe the power of manifestation, it is not literal magic. Once you’ve filled yourself up with beautiful thoughts and feelings, its time to take some action towards your goals in one form or another. It doesn’t have to be huge. You simply need to start. Start saving, start looking for entrepreneurial opportunities, start chatting to people who inspire you. Just get the ball rolling.

Step 4 Faith Possibly the hardest step, the concept of faith can be a bit tricky. Personally, I have found and continue to find my faith by looking at the patterns in my life, the rhythm of doors opening and closing and the path that has lead me to exactly where I am now. From my experiences, I trust that the Universe has my back and that I am exactly where I’m meant to be at any given time.

That’s it!

When we combine these four elements we are tapping into several of the Natural Laws of the Universe. The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like. Through the Law of Vibration, we are creating vibrations which attract like vibrations back. The Law of Action, obviously, states we have to do things, for things to happen. And the Law of Rhythm supports the ebbs and flows of nature, helping us to let go and trust in the process, knowing everything comes and goes in cycles and will continue to do so indefinitely.

Are you ready to give it a try? When you wake up tomorrow morning, try thinking of the amazing day you are going to have. Think of all the things that could go so right and fill yourself with the emotions attached. Decide you are going to do little things that you know will make your day better. Wear your favourite clothes, text a friend you love chatting to, put yourself in position to have the best possible day. And finally, trust that today is your day. Tell yourself (and genuinely believe it) that everything works out for you! Then sit back and watch the magic unfold.

By tapping into this process, we take control of our lives, we unlock greater awareness, we become better versions of ourselves. And this better version attracts better opportunities, relationships, experiences and even finances. Our possibilities become endless and our dreams become reality!

So there you have it, welcome to the world of manifestation.
